Carl's early 90s classic featuring monster musicians Mike Bukovsky, Dale Barlow, Andrew Gander, Martyn Love, Philippe Lincy, Adam Armstrong and Kristen Cornwell. Mean It is influenced by the then-popular Acid Jazz but has more of a rock edge and more compositional integrity and it's all based on Andrew Gander's thundering groove and freakish attention to detail giving the music real depth and polish. |

Carl Orr: Blue Thing | ![]() |
|||
"Blue Thing" is the darker, more serious cousin of 1993’s Mean It. There is less emphasis on funk and more on intricate compositions. However, the incredible musicians (Mike Bukovsky, Dale Barlow, Andrew Gander, Adam Armstrong, Fabian Hevia, Kristen Cornwell) tear it up and deliver unbelievable performances of passion and real class. Lovingly recorded, like Mean It, by the sorely missed Neal Sandbach at the ABC’s Ultimo Studios with the assistance of Jim McLeod, the production is first class. |

Carl’s take on the classic organ trio format with Pete Whittaker(organ) and Nic France(drums) featuring guest appearances by Julian Bury(bass), Steve Rose(piano) and Christian Brewer and Butch Thomas(saxophones) falls stylistically somewhere in-between the organ trios of John Abercrombie and John McLaughlin. The album also features some classical guitar-based tunes and a little drum’n’bass/jazz! The 2006 album was recorded the day after Carl finished a 3-day stint in Italy with Billy Cobham so he’s on top form! |

This, the Australian guitarist's 5th self-produced album is a classic funky jazz-rock tour de force. Five years since his last recording, the CD is reminiscent of many of the finest mid-seventies funky jazzthetics, whilst showcasing the guitarist's inimitable mix of fiery guitar licks and compositional flair. The sound is also retro 70's, fitting that decade's mark as the zenith of this genre, that feeling further strengthened by the presence of no less than king of the fusion tub thumpers, Billy Cobham on two tracks, with whom Orr toured in the late 90's.
