Confection: Confection | ![]() |
Confection are Sydney based duo Juanita Tippins and Josh Beagley. Confection set out to create classic funksoul anthems like those of yesteryear - old school synth and slap-bass driven groovers and slowjams, the sort of songs that sound great on the radio and phat on the dancefloor, with big choruses and sinewy elastic rhythms. Compounding an encyclopaedic knowledge of Jam and Lewis-produced records with a whole new bag of natural born sticky sweet funk, Confection are here and ready to flick the sugar switch. Fatback 4Way: Generate Some Action | ![]() |
Fatback 4Way is an ElectroBoogie machine from Sydney, Australia, pumping out phundamental funk, super-rare groove and retroactive songcraft. Their human uprockers are convincingly programmed to re-simulate, create and enervate. Their synthesistic, humanistic sounds WILL thrill you. It’s like the group were timewarped for 24 hours into 1984 and came back with the secret rule book for electrofunk domination. Generate Some Action is their debut single featuring talkbox master Don Dolla. |

Michael Wheatley: Static Alley | ![]() |
Static Alley is my first album in 3 years since Deep Clean and also an album that has been worked at slowly, bit by bit over the last 10 years. It's a collection of late night jams, poems written on torn note pad pages, experimental sound recordings, mixes turned and tossed rapidly during breaks from intensive touring and grooves that have, through the webbing of lyrics, melded into a concept. These songs all have a story and have morphed and grown, almost like a large adopted family, into an album. They have all come from different places and moments in time yet somehow all gel so well. They talk of connection, of communication, digital blended with analog, clarity within distortion, self and community, information highway versus Static Alley. |

Michael Wheatley: Residual Current Device | ![]() |
Residual Current Device is the latest original release by Michael Wheatley. The EP is a neat little package of six songs spanning a wide variety of genres but laced with Michael’s trademark funk and love of groove-based music. The EP was the result of having some unfinished tracks left over from Michael’s last full album Universal Joint and deciding to divert his extra creative juice toward them. From falsetto powered disco rock anthems like 'You Got Em' to deep underwater dub like 'Waitin On A Wave' the result is vibrant, catchy, coloured with mood and lit with lyrical inspirations. |

Pat Powell: About Time | ![]() |
'About Time' speaks to the heart of your favourite soul music, then takes twists and turns through romantic blues ballads and Motown funk via the deep south. Underpinned by the unfailing vocals of Australian artist Pat Powell (vocals for Melbourne Ska Orchestra, Kylie Minogue and countless others) the album meanders through gospel inflected harmonies reminiscent of the Staple Singers, powers through funk horn pieces worthy of a Sharon Jones set, then settles into organ-driven grooves and Jamaican upbeat. Easy on the ear but with a lot more sass than your average fare. |
