Revisiting a Site Classic- Arabesk: Front Ear

Arabesk play a brand of music that is often described as Gypsy Soul. For those looking to embark on a journey of authentic musical exploration, not contained by any cultural boundary, they are a band guaranteed to put some real “gypsy” in your “soul”. Arabesk’s music follows many paths at any one time. Like a river it is fed from many different tributries to form the whole, drawing upon strong jazz influences… Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery, Eastern European Gypsy/Classical music, upon a back drop of heavily African and Arabic influenced rhythms. At any moment it will swing hard, only to drop into a thick funk pumped bass line, all the while the violin floating above it. The drums hammer and thunder beats reminicent of Motown, Blue note and Afro Cuban jazz. Arabesk are: Veren Grigorov (Violin/Viola), Rob Shannon (Guitar/Darbuka), James Haselwood (Upright Bass/Electric Bass) and Calvin Welch (Drums/Percussion).

Brassov: Chronic Rhythmosis

Brassov released their World-Gypsy-Jazz album ‘Chronic Rhythmosis’ in 1997.

“Berserk, butt-shaking Balkan rhythm ‘n’ brass”. Thundering drums and percussion, trumpet and baritone, tenor and alto saxophones in twisty time signatures.

Brassov are Robert Guzmanyi, Christine Evans, Kim Sanders, Boyd, Peter Kennard and James Pattugalan.

Kim Sanders and Friends: You Can’t Get There From Here

Kim Sanders and Friends’ ARIA-nominated album ‘You Can’t Get There From Here’ showcases traditional pieces from the Balkans and Middle-East and original pieces including ‘Hepimiz Deliyiz’ (We’re All Crazy), first performed at the Ataturk Cultural Centre with the Istanbul State Modern Folk Music Ensemble, 2001. Demented Gypsy-style collective improvisation, Indo-Turkish grooves and more…

Kim Sanders: ney, kaval, mey, duduk, saluang, duduk, Bulgarian and Turkish gaidas, aardvark, tenor sax, gong. Bobby Singh: tablas. Sabahattin Akdagcik: baglama, oud, yayli tambur.
Steve Elphick: double bass. Peter Kennard: percussion. Epizo Bangoura: djembe, balafon.

Chris Gudu: Bavimbeni

Chris Kayana Gudu hails from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and the up tempo and exuberant music Chris performs on this album is what is often referred to as township jive music. It is better known back in southern Africa as Umbaqanga music which sometimes presents a touch of Afro jazz. Umbaqanga music originates from the streets and shebeens of Soweto, spreading all through and across southern Africa.

Chris Gudu: Imnandi

Chris Gudu is a significant part of the African music journey in Australia. This inspiring and dynamic album stays true to his Zimbabwean roots and was released in 2011, three years after the release of his first solo hit album. Imnandi contains the rhythmical spirit of Zimbabwe. The album was recorded in Sydney, Australia and produced by Chris Gudu band lead guitarist, Michael Coggins.

Chris Gudu describes the album as carrying a real message both lyrically and musically. The first tune ‘Mhuri Ye Zimbabwe’ is a powerful song which he wrote in acknowledging the beauty of his homeland and its hardworking people. Other songs in the album celebrate life, spirituality, humanity and harmony.

It is hard to resist the rhythms from Imnandi. Dancing to this album is an inescapable part of the experience.

Chris Komorowski: As I Hear It

Guitar virtuoso, Chris Komorowski and his amazing album, ‘As I Hear It’, will brighten your day with brilliant contemporary jazz compositions. Komorowski and his guitar work their magic on classic standards and pop tunes creating an album of superb instrumentals that are dynamic and full of creative style. You’ll be hooked right from the first track, ‘Let’s Fall In Love’, as this song is vibrant and lively as Komorowski deftly glides his fingers across the fret board. The Beatles classics, ‘Michelle’ and ‘Penny Lane’ are truly talented works as each song has its own special melodic tonality with crisp and clean clarity. Another favorite, ‘There Will Never Be Another You’, will dazzle you with its precise precision and dexterity. So sit back and relax and enjoy the fantastic jazz guitar styles on the album, ‘As I Hear It’, as it would be a great addition to your jazz collection. Diane and the RadioIndy.com Reviewer Team

The aim of this recording was to create an album that intimately showcases the jazz guitar as a solo instrument where, as the listener, you can close your eyes and imagine I’m in the room and playing for you. So sit back with a nice glass of red and enjoy! (And remember, the more you drink the better I’ll sound!) Chris Komorowski

Errol H. Renaud: TBR

TBR was released in 2011 by Errol H. Renaud. TBR stands for ‘True Born Revolutionary’ and has 15 original songs by Errol.

Errol H. Renaud was born in the Caribbean twin island state of Trinidad and Tobago. He started as an entertainer with the Ujamaa performing company and the culture of the Caribbean became a way of life. He has been to over twenty countries spreading the message of Soca, Reggae, Calypso, the Steelpan, limbo and other music and dance from his birth place.

Errol was an original member of the first authentic reggae band that was formed in Australia – Un-Tabu. He is now based in Sydney, playing his brand of music with a rich Caribbean flavour, a taste of conscious lyrics and a heavy dose of happiness.

Fuego Lento: Un Sueño Raro

What is Tango? A melancholy thought that can be danced? The musical expression of nostalgia? The mythology of Tango is complex and elusive. What we do know is that Tango is born from the wave of immigration to Argentina in the late Nineteenth century. Predominantly Italian and Spanish immigrants created a cultural mix that was in turn inspired by the popular Cuban Tango Habenera rhythm, the rural Milonga dance and African Candombe drumming from Uruguay.

Fuego Lento are a Sydney based Tango quintet formed in 2007. Bringing together an electic mix of musicians, they are united by a desire to explore Tango; from Osvaldo Pugliese’s more traditional sounds to the more contemporary Nuevo Tango of Astor Piazzolla.

Exploring the music in concert and at Milongas (Tango venues), the group have developed an exciting and original approach, creating a fusion of the diverse experiences brought by each member. Un Sueño Raro features five original compositions from the pianist and ensemble leader Daniel Wallace – Crabbe. There are also three Piazzolla compositions – Zum, Milonga Del Angel and Michelangelo 70 – as well as a selection of traditional Tangos and Milongas.

Don Dolla: Intromental

Don Dolla‘s debut album “Intromental” finds him pushing the boundaries of R&B, Hip Hop, Funk, Soul and Rock, experimenting with and within different styles and genres, setting him up as a revolutionary producer, songwriter and artist. “Intromental” hits hard and hits catchy, Featuring local and international talents such as Richard Tanumi, EarthQuake, Mike Champion, Noble, Rebecca Tapia & many more. Don Dolla also displays his extraordinary talk-box skills that only get better by the song.

Sally Street: One Bite At The Cherry

Sally Street released her second jazz album, One Bite At The Cherry in 2008. The album served as an exclamation mark to her stellar career and maintained the momentum created by her critically-acclaimed debut jazz album. One Bite At The Cherry is supported by extensive airplay across jazz and blues radio stations Australia wide. Sally performs in Australia and internationally with her bands, consisting of the cream of the Australian jazz scene. Born into a musical family, Sally has completed AMEB piano studies and is mentored by jazz vocal legends Kerrie Biddell, Joy Yates and Steve Clisby.

Sally Street is described by the Australian press as the ‘It Girl’ of the Sydney jazz scene, her jazz albums are jam-packed with saucy jazz, blues and latin-jazz songs with a delivery straight from ‘Naughty Land’. Sally is a sassy jazz chanteuse with a voice and personality that’s seductive and playful – think Peggy Lee, Eartha Kitt, with a touch of Marilyn and Blossom Dearie! In essence, Sally puts the muse back into music and brings razzle dazzle into the magical world of jazz.

One Bite At The Cherry features Bill Risby(piano), Adrian Cunningham(sax), Ian Cooper(strings), Andrew Dickeson(drums), Natalie Morrison(bass) and Jonathan Pease(guitar). Produced by Sally and Steve Clisby.

Sally Street: The Scorpion Maid

Sally Street released her pop-rock album ‘The Scorpion Maid’ in 2010. The album showcases 12 of her original catchy pop-rock songs with wicked lyrics recorded with an all-star band and mixed by Grammy Award winning engineer, Helik Hadar, in LA.

Sally co-produced and co-wrote ‘The Scorpion Maid’ with her pianist Gerard Masters. This is her genre-crossing third studio album after releasing two Jazz albums. ‘Facebook Freak’ was selected as a Finalist in the 12th Annual Great American Song Contest for 2010. 5 of the tracks on ‘The Scorpion Maid’ were also shortlisted in the Australian Songwriting Competition. The 3 Sally Street albums released so far have become darlings of community radio in Australia, the U.S. and France.

The Scorpion Maid features the talents of Gerard Masters (piano and backing vocals), James Muller (guitar), Phil Stack (bass), Ian Mussington (drums), Ian Cooper (violin), Adrian Cunningham and Andy Bickers (sax) and Dan Barnett (trombone).

Darren Heinrich Trio: New Vintage Tunes For The Hammond Organ

New Vintage Tunes for the Hammond Organ (2007) is perhaps a first for Australian Jazz – an album of entirely original material performed by an organ trio. The 10 tracks (and 2 bonus tracks), composed by Darren, run the gamut of the jazz spectrum in style. Swing, Funk, Boogaloo, Ballads and Blues all get a workout here and while Darren’s influences may be evident to Hammond fans, the music is undeniably original and fresh. Produced by legendary US organist Tony Monaco during a visit to Australia, the album was recorded over two days by engineer Richard Belkener.

“Jazz organ is alive and well! In fact, since it’s resurgence in the early 90s, Jazz Organ and the Soul Jazz movements continue to gain momentum. With the help of organist and producer Tony Monaco, Darren Heinrich makes his second contribution to the jazz organ discography with ‘New Vintage Tunes for the Hammond Organ’ his recording not only showcases his abilities at the Organ, but also highlights his compositional voice.

Darren uses two first class rhythm sections on this recording. Guitarist Steve Brien and drummer Andrew Dickeson, both faculty at the esteemed Sydney Conservatorium of Music, are “first call” musicians in Sydney. The second configuration of this trio consists of guitarist Simon Relf and drummer Tim Firth. Both Simon and Tim have an extensive performance background and are highly sought after in the Sydney Music Scene.” Pat Bianchi, Jazz Organist, New York City 2008

“This album is my first to feature entirely my own compositions. The decision to record with two rhythm sections was simply due to the fact that I could not choose between them. Both line-ups have something special to offer, which I guess boils down to a traditional approach versus a more modern, looser feel. I love both styles and I think that the tunes work both ways. Of course, I ultimately had to pick between them and so here are what I feel are the best takes of each tune, with two alternate takes for the listener to compare and enjoy.” Darren Heinrich

Personnel: Darren Heinrich (Hammond B3) with Steve Brien (Guitar) & Andrew Dickeson (Drums) or Simon Relf (Guitar) & Tim Firth (Drums).

Carl Orr: Emergence

I was a teenager in the 70s, a small window of time when most homes had a stereo system but no computers, games consoles or even VCRs. My friends and I would spend hours and hours listening to albums by Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Beatles and Bob Marley. I was also listening to jazz and fusion, especially Herbie Hancock, Weather Report and Mahavishnu, and classical music, in particular Bach and Beethoven. Emergence is the culmination of those influences; you will hear traces of them all; the soundscapes of Pink Floyd, Hendrix’s backwards guitar, wah wah and general awesome bodacity, soothing reggae grooves, Mahavishnu’s crazy intensity, the introspection of Bach, Headhunters funk, bossa nova, and, from the Beatles; a love of composition, varied musical textures, unorthodox production techniques, and presentation of the album as a whole concept. However, I made use of modern recording techniques such as sampling and digital editing for a 21st Century sound. Emergence is very much influenced by the towering presence of keyboardist/composer Sean Wayland, a multidimensional musical genius whose passion, virtuosity and uniqueness permeate the album throughout. The other musicians, Tom Mason, Darryn Farrugia, Patrick Bettison and Les Davidson made inspired contributions to the album, and engineer Tom Davidson recorded the music with clarity, simplicity and a beautiful warm glow. Emergence is a very contemporary album but one that I hope will sit comfortably next to your dog-eared Steely Dan, Beatles, and 70s Miles albums. Carl Orr: Guitar, Sean Wayland: keyboards, Tom Mason: bass, Darryn Farrugia: drums and percussion, Les Davidson: rhythm guitar on Shoten Zenjin

Kim Sanders with Peter Kennard: Trance’n'Dancin

Trance’n'Dancin is an exploration of trance music, from the etherial flights of the ney flute used in the rituals of Turkey’s Mevlevi Dervishes to the hypnotic dance-rhythms of the Balkans. “This is an energetic and distinctive blend of virtuoso playing from multi-instrumentalist Kim Sanders, masterfully accompanied by Peter Kennard’s magic trunk of percussion…Trance’n'Dancin features several different fascinating musical styles – Sufi meditations, Turkish lullabies, trance music, folk tunes – as well as an enigmatic track, ‘Solitary Circumambulation’, which is the world’s first composition for Bulgarian bagpipes (Gaida) and Hammond organ. Sanders is a relentless champion of world music and this album celebrates the freshness and sheer excitement of the Balkan and Turkish traditions with added new twists and a funky rhythm section to create a joyful session of music for listening or dancing” – Jas Hall, ABC Limelight Magazine

Genre defying and game changing, Polar Nation takes polar opposites and melds them together in a unique blend of Rock, Hip-Hop, Electronica and Rhythm and Blues. In the mid 90s Marlene refined her skills as a blues saxophonist and song writer at the Berklee College of Music, Boston USA. In the past 2 decades, she has collaborating with some of the greats on the blues & jazz scene including jazz guitarist Ray Beadle. Marlene’s music shares the Aboriginal perspective and is influenced by her father, Darcy Cummins. This EP Whichway Up includes the song Pemulwuy which was written as a gift to her Redfern Aboriginal community. “Blues is not just about singing sad songs, it’s about elevating people’s spirits. You have to go to a place within yourself to do that and that can take years.” -Marlene Cummins

Joe West EP: Home Again

Bakhu: Throat Singer Horse Fiddler

His music is a contemporary take on the tradition of Mongolian bards of the middle ages and those of ancient times, acting as a national memory bank by working mythologies, historic figures and events into traditional verse form. Bakhu evolves the folk music of Mongolia while exploring aural dimensions of the sounds he generates with traditional instruments and overtone vocal techniques.

Bukhu is a musical ambassador of his country. His virtuosic Morin Khurr and Khoomei skills transmit the harmony of Mongolian Shamanic culture through time and space. Embodying the cultural spirit of reinterpreted narratives through verse is a key element of the enchanting powers of Mongolian folk traditions, his influences from the work of contemporary composers are woven into the fabric of these arrangements.

As an accomplished composer of contemporary music himself, Bukhu incorporate elements of genres into his songs as diverse as Overtone Chanting, Folk, Classical, Blues and Metal. He has played around the world with performers from France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Luxemburg, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Austria and Australia.

Glenn Cardier: House Of Mirrors

Glenn Cardier released his second comeback album, House of Mirrors, in 2004. The album served as a declaration that Glenn was committed to his return after 2 decades. House of Mirrors includes his favourite songs to play live. Some songs have a tougher delivery which works well onstage. Glenn plays bottleneck on ‘Asylum Blues’ and ‘Water Finds Its Own Level’ to add an aggressive texture. This is an album of ghosts. Elvis. The old Cloudland Ballroom in Brisbane. Knockin’ round the old haunts. ‘Glenn Cardier has been writing and performing moving, insightful, powerful and important songs for more than thirty years. His intriguing evolution has given us something like a cross between John Prine and John Lee Hooker. With captivating presence, a commanding vocal style and a gloriously perverse point of view that produces songs which take firm hold and linger long, he comes dangerously close to being certified as a national treasure.’ [Glenn A Baker]

Tokyo Love-In & Yama Sarshar: Nights In Dubai

Nights in Dubai – Chillout Lounge Sessions by Sydney based Tokyo Love-In, is a magical collision of Eastern traditions, global beats and Western “electronic jazz” fused with the live improvisations of tabla virtuoso, Yama Sarshar.Electronic artist, Tokyo Love-In (Michael K. Yama is establised internationally as a prodigious young talent. He received tutelage from the world famous tabla maestro, Zukir Hussein.

Glenn Cardier: Rattle The Cage

Glenn Cardier made his critically-acclaimed comeback with the 2002 album, Rattle The Cage. The reclusive singer-songwriter performs his songs and stories of dark humor. Rattle The Cage includes the stark beauty of “She Flew Away”, the rockabilly rave-up “Shingaling” and the Berlin cabaret of “Sideshow Alley”. In the 70s, Glenn produced three albums of highly original folk/rock songs. He played the first two Sunbury festivals and worked with the likes of Frank Zappa, Spike Milligan and Fairport Convention. “The one that got it all going again. Initial copies were pressed for friends and family. Not even a bar code. ABC Darwin started playing the hell out of it and things went from there. The ABC contacted me and said that they’d had numerous enquiries, even from local record stores. Mostly, it was ‘who is this guy?’ They recommended I get some stock up there fast. I remember trying out some of the songs at open mike nights at the Excelsior, Surrey Hills, just to see if I could do it again. It was a bit like being reacquainted with an old friend. I started getting invited to play solo at festivals and suchlike.” Glenn Cardier

iHearMusic.com Presents The World in the Basement II

Posted by Calvin on July 25, 2011 under All Categories, Events, Update | Be the First to Comment

The Basement last week was slamin’! I’d like to thank everybody who came and supported iHearMusic.com and the amazing line up we had on offer. This second installment of ‘iHearMusic.com Presents the World in the Basement’ was a fabulous dose of Good Vibes and Girl Power to up the spirits of everybody who fought the torrential rain outside.

First up was just what the Doctor ordered! Dr. Goodvibe is emerging as an original voice in contemporary music, with influences derived from a multiplicity of musical styles, they create upbeat, colourful music that draws on the rhythms of the world. With Edu Valk singing & on guitar and Christian Marsh on the harmonica, they offered a collection of bluesy, funky, jazzy and soulful elements.  Added to this musical melting pot were Elsen Price on bass, Heath Jefferies on percussion and myself on drums. Together we took the audience through acoustic, rock and through to funk, reggae and back around again

Then the girls took over the stage! We had five amazing performers backed up by the fabulous and fierce vocals of Keren Minshull & Liza Olhback and the wonderful Jo Fabro Band.

First off the bat was Dee Lavell. Dee’s experience is obvious when she takes the stage as her presence and passion lift the room and her soulful voice fills the air. Leanne Paris performed with her own band, providing a delight to the senses as she put a fresh spin on the sound, feel, look, taste and smell of the music of the greats. One of the biggest voices in the business is that of Gail Page who took the stage next with her amazing gift that manages to infiltrate the atmosphere with it’s soulful power. Rebekah Jensen is the type of performer who will play the Opera House one night and a café the next and give both all she’s got, amazing audiences with her mesmerizing vocals and dramatic range. Last, but certainly not least was Jo Fabro, backed up by her band. Her sound converges contemporary soul and jazz with that of the 50’s and 60’s, giving a unique spin on the traditional.

The most amazing part of the night for me was when all the girls jumped up on the stage to perform one last song together. It wasn’t planned, but you can’t plan something like that!

So with all of the iHearMusic.com lollies gone, people’s feet pulsating from dancing too hard and everybody still shocked and amazed by Dr. Goodvibe’s diversity, Dee Lavell’s sweet sound, Leanne Paris’ gutsy vocals, Gail Page’s deep lungs, Rebekah Jensen’s strong vocals (and very cool pink outfit) and Jo Fabro’s jazzy voice we can’t wait to see you all next time for some more musical delights! On Tuesday August 16th we ask you to all jump on the iHearMusic.com shuttle and take a ride from the Himalayas to the Caribbean! Then just when you think it’s your stop, you’ll find yourself timewarped into 1984 by an ElectroBoogie funk machine! Rosie Henshaw, Errol Renaud’s Caribbean Soul and Fatback 4Way are the next line up in this series.

Also, on Thursday August 11, in that very same room, iHearMusic.com will be taking Jazz guitar Legend Carl Orr to the stage. Guitarist Carl Orr, regarded as a legend of jazz rock fusion and one of the most dynamic guitarists on the Australian scene for some twenty years from the mid seventies, will make a rare visit to Australia in August and will be at The Basement. His performances will feature music from his most recent album “Emergence’, recorded in the UK in 2009. Quartet Arabesk will be joining Carl for this night to put a little gypsy in your soul! These boys have adopted many disparate international sounds and moulded them into their own unique style.

Until the next gig!
